Internet Relay Chat
The best way for communication between members of clans, other players, and other clans is through the use of IRC. It is basically a chat program using servers and channels that can be joined by many people. A common client is mIRC, it can be downloaded at www.mirc.com. Once you have this downloaded and installed it can actually be quite tricky to set up. In the main options panel you should browse through the various settings, most importantly you should fill out:
Connect
Full Name (doesn't have to actually be your name)
Email (doesn't even need to be an email address)
Nickname (your alias people will see you as)
Alternate (nickname to use if the first is already taken)
Servers
IRC Network: GameSurge
IRC Server: Gamesurge: Random server
Click Connect
Options
Connect on startup (will automatically connect to server when mirc is started)
Connect on disconnection (will reconnect if needed)
Identd
User ID (virtually just your nickname again)
System (this can be anything)
Click OK
This will bring you back to the status window, and you should be connected to the GameSurge IRC server. Once connected, you can use the command /join in the type box to join some channels (in IRC / represents a command, typing without one is a normal text message which is sent to the channel). For example the NSPlayer channel is #nsplayer, so to join it one would type (without quotation marks) “/join #nsplayer”. Many other communities and virtually ever clan also has their own channel, they can by found either asking around or looking into relevant clan details on the site. Once in a channel you will notice it gets a tab up the top, this bar allows you to switch between the channels in view, you are still ‘in’ any channels you’ve joined, regardless of current view. On the right is a panel showing a list of all the people currently in that channel, the symbol @ represents a channel operator, usually the admins in a community or members in a clan channel, + represents voice, it means that if the channel is moderated they will still be able to talk (not very important). To leave a channel either use the cross for it’s window, or the command “/part”.
IRC uses only very few system resources and can remain open and minimized whilst doing other things or playing. The act of idling is staying connected with mIRC open as long as your online so people can contact you if need be. If your nickname is said it will generally be highlighted and give some sort of alert, this can be configured more in the options dialogue. Due to its nature, conversations and response times may be fairly slow on IRC.
